Founded in 1924, the school developed into Shandong Ocean University in 1959 after private Qingdao University, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University, Shandong University, etc., and was designated as one of the 13 key comprehensive universities in the country in 1960. In 1988, it was renamed Qingdao Ocean University, and in 2002, it was renamed Ocean University of China.

The school has three campuses: Laoshan Campus, Yushan Campus and Fushan Campus, covering an area of more than 2,400 acres. The West Coast Campus is under construction.
