Shanghai Dianji University is a general higher education institution oriented to advanced manufacturing and modern service industries, focusing on engineering and coordinated development of economics, management, literature, art, science and other disciplines.

The school was established in 1953 by the former Electrical Appliance Industry Administration of the First Ministry of Machinery Industry, and was formed by some teachers and students of Shanghai Middle School, Shanghai Industrial School, and National Shanghai Advanced Mechanical Vocational School. The school was originally named Shanghai Electrical Manufacturing School, and it has successively undergone the development and evolution of Shanghai Electrical Manufacturing School, Shanghai Electrical Manufacturing Technology College, and Shanghai Electrical Engineering Technical College. In 1985, the school held the first batch of five-year technical college education in the country on a trial basis. In 2002, it was listed as a national key construction higher vocational college. In 2004, Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry School and Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry Workers College were merged into the school; in September of the same year, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the school was renamed Shanghai Dianji University and upgraded to a full-time general undergraduate university. In 2011, the school was listed by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a pilot unit for professional degree graduate students in the "Service the National Special Needs Talent Training Project", and began postgraduate education. In 2020, the school was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree granting unit.

The school has two major campuses, Lingang and Minhang, with a campus area of 1147 acres. There are currently nearly 12,800 full-time graduate, undergraduate and junior college students. The total value of teaching and research equipment is 330 million yuan; the library has 1.372 million paper books and 1.661 million e-books. The school implements a school-school (department) secondary management system, with 14 secondary teaching units under it, and jointly established Shanghai Electric Libin Technician College with Shanghai Electric (Group) Corporation.
