Shenzhen University (SZU) is located in China's pioneering city of reform and open-up —— Shenzhen. Known as “the Special Economic Zone University, the Window University, the Experimental University,” SZU has grown into a multi-disciplinary university hosting over 34,000 students, 3,770 faculty and staff members  since it was founded in 1983. SZU, characterized by its youthful vigor, beautiful campus and rapid growth, offers bachelor, master and Ph.D. degrees in a wide range of programs. SZU is committed to building an innovative, high-level and internationally prominent university.

One of our goals is to nurture students’ innovative and entrepreneurial spirit to boost social, economic and cultural prosperity in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau and beyond.

History

Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was established in 1980. Three years later, the municipal government of the new city founded Shenzhen University (SZU). Characterized by what Mr. Deng Xiaoping called “Shenzhen Speed,” SZU enrolled its first students in 1983, and has since rapidly grown into a well-known multi-discipline institution boasting over 34,000 students, including 5,500 postgraduates and over 1,500 international students. Apart from the full-time students, approximately 13,000 students are engaged in various forms of continuing education. 

SZU is fully accredited by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. In the mid-1990’s, SZU passed all academic evaluations and won authorization from the Degree Committee of the State Council to award graduate degrees. In January 2006, the State Council gave SZU approval to grant doctorate degree (PhD). Therefore, with Shenzhen Speed, SZU has developed into a truly comprehensive university offering more than 70 different undergraduate programs, over 130 master’s programs and 8 doctorate degree programs.

SZU maintains a high-caliber teaching staff with top credentials. Seeking to build a faculty with different age groups and experiential backgrounds, SZU built up a teaching faculty of 2,127 teachers, among which 504 are professors and 768 are associate professors, 1 Nobel Prize Winner, 10 Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Academy of Engineering, 3 Academician from American Academy of Sciences, Academy of Engineering and Academy of Medical Sciences, 3 National 973 Program Chief Scientist, 60 Central Organization Department “Thousand-Talent-Plan”. The university has a full-time administrative staff of over 1,000 who fulfill teaching and researching support tasks.

SZU is actively involved in the social and economic development of Shenzhen as well as the entire country. The university has fostered and supported a number of cutting-edge disciplines. Many programs have been awarded and recognized at both the provincial and national levels, which are Architecture and Architectural Design, Biological Science, Communication and Information Technology, Mass Communication and Media, Finance, Economics and Regional Economic Studies, Management and Public Administration, Optical Engineering, Material Sciences and Chemistry, Comparative Literature, Political Economics and International Law, and Structural Engineering.
