Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, which is included in China's Double First Class Project for building world-class disciplines, has made remarkable contributions to the founding and development of the People’s Republic of China. Its predecessor was the Wartime Postal Administration Cadre Training Class of Shandong Anti-Japanese Base, which was established in 1942 and one of the earliest schools of the CPC and its army for training proper telecommunication talents. In 1958, she was converted into Nanjing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications upon the approval of the State Council. In April 2005, she was renamed as Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Once a key university under direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (now the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), the institute was in February 2000 turned over to the co-administration by the Jiangsu Government and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, with the former assuming main responsibilities. NJUPT is on theprovince’s listof universities for prior development. In October 2013, NJUPT incorporated Nanjing College for Population Program Management, according to the official documents issued by the Ministry of Education and Jiangsu Government. NJUPT adheres to thespirit of “Reaching out to the world while strivingpersistentlyfor perfection”, holdsthe ethos of “diligence, practicality, progression and innovation”, and lives out the motto of “morality, persistence, practicality and sincerity”. 

NJUPT, with a down-to-earth attitude and pioneering spirit, has identified a unique strategy for development, one that focuses on specialization in the field of telecommunications while reaching out to more sectors in an increasingly informatized society. The 18th Central Committee of the CPC required that efforts be taken to ensure that “universities focus on respective strengths and strive for building first-class higher education institutions”. China is actively promoting the “InternetPlus”action plan, which gives NJUPT more space for development. Now the university is taking opportunity to realize the five visions, namely “strong feature, high level, multiple disciplines, teaching research, and internationalization”, and carrying out the four strategies of “improve the university with quality, talent, features, and innovation”. NJUPT aims to be better known to the world, and, given time, rank her discipline of electronic information science and engineering among the best in the world.
